Lutherwood was founded in 1970 to help troubled adolescents and their families. While Lutherwood offers services in three key areas (Mental Health Services, Employment Development and Seniors Services) it is nationally recognized and highly respected for its work in children's mental health. Lutherwood provides a complete range of preventative and supportive interventions for children, adolescents and their families who are coping with behavioural, emotional or psychological problems.

Lutherwood’s Childrens Mental Health Centre on Benjamin Road serves 250 young people ages 12-17 each year through their residential, day treatment and community-based programs. Lutherwood accepts the most difficult children and youth and has a remarkable record of success in helping them cope with and manage their mental health challenges.

Lutherwood will be receiving $4 million in infrastructure funding from the Provincial and Federal governments to transform its aging facility.

The revitalized centre will no longer feature dark and cramped spaces that "hide" the children. Instead it will be opened up and filled with light, reflecting excellence and optimism -- while removing the negative stigma about mental health issues. Dominated by the "Main Street" Atrium, new therapeutic spaces will be added including: Psychology Clinic, Health Clinic, Calming Room, Music Therapy, Art Therapy, Play Therapy, Recreation and Fitness Area, Environmental Classroom. A dramatically expanded research role will be created through The Centre of Excellence for Children and Families.

Lutherwood is grateful to the Rotary Club of Kitchener/Conestoga in helping to create a facility that will serve children with mental health challenges well into the future.
